Yas Island Circuit
Formula 1 racing has long been one of the most compelling and exhilarating racing experiences in the world. The 17 races which today make up the FIA World Championship put drivers a true endurance test at speeds of up to 360 km/h (220 mph). Originally, these thrilling experiences were primarily held on European tracks but now other parts of the world are showcasing these phenomena events, including the newest addition to the circuit: the Abu Dhabi F1 race.
Racing on Yas Island
Home to the newly constructed Yas Island Circuit, this man-made island near Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is one of the most amazing in the entire circuit line-up. The inaugural race for the track will be held on November 1, 2009. Known as the Abu Dhabi F1, this race will also close the 2009 Formula 1 racing season and will determine which of the drivers emerges as the World Champion of racing.
History of the Track
The Yas Marina Circuit was chosen as the site for this Grand Prix in 2007 soon after construction on the race track began. Originally, the track was not intended to be a permanent addition but would instead be a combination of a street circuit combined with a semi-permanent portion. However, the designers later decided to make the Yas Island Circuit a permanent addition and the centerpiece of other planned attractions.
Approximately 40,000 racing fans can be accommodated in the circuit’s covered grand stands. All of those spectators’ eyes will be glued on the track on November 1st when the cars begin racing over the 5.55 km (3.4 miles) of track.
According to track officials, an entire lap is expected to take only 100 seconds to complete.
Drivers Appearing at the Abu Dhabi F1
The 2009 F1 season includes ten teams and 21 drivers from all over the world. While most of the teams hail from European countries, such as Italy or France, other teams from India, Japan, and Turkey are also set to hit the track come November.
As of July 2009, the driver to beat was British Jensen Button who has so far won 6 of the first 10 Grand Prix races of the season. His performance at the Abu Dhabi F1 could lead him to his first Formula 1 World Championship.
Attending the Race
Tickets for the November race are already in short supply. Some sections already have no available seats; other sections have only single seats still available. Two day and three day tickets are available. The costs vary from 1350 to 1900 AED ($368 to $518 USD). VIP packages, including special accommodations, are also available at prices starting at 14,480 AED ($3,940 USD) for one day.
